Oriental Wooden Jewelry BoxView progress: 1 | 2

The original hide glue was failing on this unusual 1910 Chinese jewelry box. There was evidence of previous restoration. All the joins were loose and unstable and three of the mirror panels and the door were detached. To begin repair, the box was completely dismantled and all the joins were cleared. Wooden backing brackets were fabricated to hold the mirrors in place properly. The reconstruction process was with hide glue, which followed traditional techniques. Scratches to the surface were retouched and the exterior was waxed and polished.

Wooden objects and furniture are preserved with function and the integrity of the original craftsmanship in mind. Chairs and tables that are damaged can be stabilized and returned to useful condition. Attaching or replacing veneers, inlay and marquetry, and gilding to bronze mounts or deteriorated finishes are some of our special areas of expertise. Missing sections can be hand carved or fabricated to match the original, and water stained or flawed finishes reintegrated.
