Oil on Canvas: Seated Young Girl with ApplesView progress: 1 | 2

This charming 19th century painting of young girl holding a basket of apples was in excellent condition overall. There was a tiny abrasion in the paint film in the upper right quadrant, and the surface varnish had become discolored and dull with age. The old varnish was meticulously removed with special solvents meticulously applied with cotton swabs. An isolating varnish layer was applied, then the small abrasion was filled and retouched so as to be completely undetectable. The entire painting surface was then recoated with a new varnish layer for continued protection.

The paintings department offers a full range of conservation services on both traditional and contemporary paintings. In addition to cleaning processes and removal of previous repairs, torn canvases can be patched or lined and new supports systems provided as needed. Delaminating or flaking paint can be stabilized and missing areas filled to match the original paint. Our minimal retouching beautifully reintegrates the image to the artist intent. Restoration treatments are also available for paintings on panel, such as Russian icons, and mixed media.
